THUMBPRINT RADIO

THE PROBLEM

Users of Pandora, up to the point of this project, had no way to start a radio station that was powered by a fully comprehensive amalgamation of all of their positive listening history.

THE PLAN

Differentiate

Im sure the first thought that comes up when someone hears about this is, "isn't that just shuffle?"

The reply to that, honestly, is "kind of."

I helped to define a set of features for this product that both showed and acted in some tangibly better ways.

Educate

Among the feature sets proposed, a new station details view and a new information toast component, inspired by the old VH1 pop up video show, were suggested.

This would help users see where we're pulling context for a song from and look back on their full thumbs up history.

Decorate

Branding was a major consideration for this effort as well. We knew from the jump that we wanted to market this feature so I needed to come up with something that would stand out for print and digital.

THE PROGRESS

Coming into this work, there were a few one off patterns that had been tested and could suit our need.

The issue was these were slated to be deprecated because they didn't work broadly enough. While they offered a space for us to get early learnings I was tasked with evolving what was promising into widely adoptable patterns.

THE PRODUCT

Early explorations really leaned into a more immersive single column layout as I was chasing the look and feel of video first experiences like Netflix and Hulu.

As things progressed the UI landed on a more flexible 2 column system to maintain consistency across the other parts of Facebook.
